Description

Production sketch done in 2006 for "Painy McPain".

Here's what the rest of Painy McPain looks like. You could only see him from the shoulders up in the video. I'm kinda bummed because I have a better version of this image that I cleaned up and inked, but I can't seem to find it, so I could only submit this rough sketch for now. I'll move this sketch to scraps if and when I find the inked one. Also, in the inked version, the unfinished leg on the left was actually changed to a peg leg. Plus, the "Kick Me" panel on his crotch is a lot more prominent.

When I first came up with the character I got the idea from the overly detailed, gory, and "extreme" designs of Todd MacFarlane and Rob Leiffeld, like the exposed heart is influenced by the design of Astaroth from Soul Calibur II. A bigger inspiration was the Invader Zim episode "Hobo 13", in which Zim is sent to planet Hobo 13 to receive military training from Sargent Hobo (voiced by R. Lee Ermey) and the running gag is the constant repitition of "Pain", IE: the "Holding Pen of Pain", the "Chasm of Hideous Sceaming Pain", The "Meat-Thirsty Hogulus... Zim: 'of Pain?' Sgt. Hobo: 'Ergh! Errrrrgh!'". I first created him as a Ronnie Raccoon character and he would be summmoned to Earth through a cursed puzzle box, as a parody of Pinhead and the Cenobites from "Hellraiser." With these three influences I came up with this psychotic, masochistic character and about two years later I got the idea to make him into a short for my Stop-Motion class in the Joe Kubert School film animation program.

Painy McPain hails from the "Dimension of Pain," where all the inhabitants think about nothing but feeling/inflicting pain, and loving it. I also have a production sketch of the Dimension of Pain, but I also seem to have misplaced it. I'm sure I'll find it soon, though. The D.O.P. is kind of like an entire realm made of living skinless flesh and bone and metal pointy things sticking in it everywhere. I got the idea from the "living innards" design from the "Hell" stage at the end of "Devil May Cry", I found it to be a really freaky vision of what Hell may be like. I guess I can count "Doom" and the surreal backgrounds in the "Black Hole" episode of Ren & Stimpy as part of the influence behind it too.
